Although there was early concern that twisted paper handled paper bags would not withstand much weight, these bags have ultimately proven to be quite durable up to a certain weight limit.  Paper bags received a boost in retail after they were given handles, which eliminated a flaw for an otherwise sturdy way to bundle goods. Earlier, paper bag handles were crafted by hand, but today's machines can create handles and affix them to the bags in mass quantities. Even the glue applied to the handles is nearly perfect today.
